How to Install Tree Guard Stakes

Hardwood Stakes
, May 8, 2025

Tree guard stakes play a crucial role in supporting and protecting young trees, especially in their early stages of growth. Proper installation ensures your trees grow upright, are less susceptible to wind damage, and are protected from animals or accidental knocks.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to install Tree Guard Stakes properly for maximum stability and effectiveness.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Choose the Right Stakes

Select durable, timber-based Tree Guard Stakes that suit the height and expected growth of your plant. For most saplings, two to three stakes are ideal to create a triangular support structure.

Step 2: Position the Stakes

Place the stakes around the seedling, forming a triangle or square, ensuring they are at least 10 cm away from the trunk to avoid root damage. For soft or sandy soils, you may also consider using Steel Fence Posts as reinforcement if needed.

Step 3: Drive the Stakes into the Ground

Using a hammer or mallet, drive each stake approximately 30–40 cm into the ground. The depth will depend on soil type and tree height. Make sure each stake is vertically straight for maximum support.

Step 4: Attach the Tree Guard

Wrap your preferred tree guard — such as a Corflute Tree Guard or Milk Carton Tree Guard — around the stakes. Ensure the guard surrounds the tree trunk with enough room for airflow.

Step 5: Tie the Tree Securely

Use Black Tree Ties or Hessian Tree Ties to gently secure the trunk to the stakes. Be careful not to tie too tightly — the goal is to provide gentle support while allowing movement for natural strengthening.

Tips for Long-Term Success

  • Check ties regularly and loosen them as the tree grows.
  • Replace or reinforce any damaged stakes, especially after storms.
  • Consider adding Native Plant Pills or Plant Establisher to support healthy root development.

Conclusion

Installing Tree Guard Stakes correctly can significantly improve the survival rate and strength of your young trees. Combined with the right tree guards and ties, they form a complete system for early-stage plant protection.
